When Hafez al-Assad, an Alawite minority member, seized management of the Ba’ath Celebration in Syria in 1970, he confronted a major backlash. The Syrian Structure stipulated that solely Muslims may maintain the presidency, and the Alawites had been deemed non-Muslim by many Sunni teams.
