A Justice Division official vowed to guard the free speech of citizen journalists Thursday after Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson accused “extremist influencers” of harassing Somali little one care suppliers within the metropolis.

On the eve of her inauguration, Wilson posted a message expressing “solidarity” with Somali little one care suppliers within the metropolis who've come underneath scrutiny amid a day care fraud scandal greater than 1,000 miles away in Minnesota.

“I stand with the Somali childcare suppliers who've skilled focused harassment, and condemn the surveillance marketing campaign promoted by extremist influencers,” the self-proclaimed socialist mayor wrote on X, together with an announcement warning towards filming day care facilities.

“In Seattle we imagine in solidarity, and our metropolis won't tolerate anybody who's making an attempt to intimidate, harass, or movie Somali childcare suppliers,” Wilson’s assertion learn. “Such habits is unacceptable and places kids and households in danger.”

“Household residence childcare packages are locations of care, security, and belief,” she continued. “They're privately operated companies, not public areas. And they're regulated by the federal government, not personal people or teams.”

Wilson’s publish caught the attention of Assistant Legal professional Normal Harmeet Dhillon, the pinnacle of the DOJ’s civil rights division, who warned the mayor to not infringe on the rights of unbiased journalists.

“Asking questions/citizen journalism are NOT HATE CRIMES in America — they're protected speech, and if Seattle tries to relax that speech, @CivilRights will step in to guard it and set them straight!” Dhillon wrote on X, in response to Wilson’s publish.

“Govern yourselves accordingly!” she added.
